Description

The HSBC building, formerly known as Midland Bank, is designed in the Northern European Renaissance style and dates from the early 20th century. It stands three storeys high with an attic, constructed of pale brown ashlar on a grey plinth, topped with slate roofs and featuring stone chimneys. The façade facing Stow Hill has two bays, while the Bridge Street side has five bays.

On the second floor, there are three-light mullion and transom windows, and the first floor features similar windows with pediments. The ground floor showcases three-light mullion and transom windows set within arches that have keystones. The attic is adorned with alternating dormers, some with wooden gables and others in stone, which are flanked by volutes and topped with swan-necked pediments.

The entrance is located at a splayed corner and features a turret topped with a polygonal lantern supported by a square base that includes a clock, along with a pediment on each face. There is a two-storey oriel window on the upper floors, and the doorway is framed with a segmental pediment that includes a cartouche.

Additionally, there is a lower block on Bridge Street made of red brick with extensive bathstone dressings. This section is three storeys tall with three windows; the upper floors have a central narrow window flanked by splayed bay windows, while the ground floor features a doorway to the right and simple mullioned windows to the left.
