Description
The Memorial Gates and Gate-piers at the north-west entrance to Newport Rugby Club Sports Ground are neo-classical structures made of Portland stone. The gate piers feature stepped bases and dentil cornices, topped with uniquely designed stepped acroteria that have fluted drum caps. During an inspection in March 2020, it was noted that the cap on the right-hand pier had been dislodged and required resetting. The side faces of the piers have advanced panels from which the gates are hung, adorned with Greek fret ornamentation at the top. The outward faces of the piers display bronze panels that commemorate members of the Newport Athletic Club who died in World War I.
The pair of steel gates are simply detailed, featuring Greek fret panels on the dog bar and foliate panels at the four corners of each gate. The gates are marked with the dates 1914 and 1918 and are topped with spearhead finials. Modern overhead signage is attached to brackets on the rear faces of the piers.
