Description
The Whitehall Recreation Ground War Memorial Gates are a First World War memorial designed by Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel, dating from 1922. The gates were moved in 1987 and altered in 1999 and 2005.
The gate piers are made of Portland stone and feature wrought iron gates. The memorial consists of a pair of Neo-Classical style gates, with substantial Portland stone gate piers flanking ornate wrought iron gates.
Each pier has a quadrant section with groups of Ionic pilasters at each end and at the rear corners. The central pilasters are fluted, while the others are not. These pilasters support an entablature that includes an architrave, frieze, and a deep projecting cornice. Each pier is topped with three carved urns that have tall finials. The friezes on the piers contain the original inscriptions, with the left pier reading "TO THE MEN OF RUGBY WHO" and the right pier stating "FELL IN THE WAR 1914-1919." The names of the fallen are inscribed on the piers themselves.
After the Second World War, the names of those who fell in that conflict were added to the memorial, along with an inscription on the side of the left pier that reads "TO THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE SERVICE OF THE COUNTRY/ 1939-1945."
