Description
Newport Castle is a Grade II* listed structure made of red sandstone with pale grey banding and dressings. The main surviving part consists of three towers aligned north-south along the river. The northern tower is two storeys high and semi-octagonal, with the remains of a hall to the south that features windows to the east and a fireplace in between, along with an adjacent window to an ante-room. The great central tower includes a water gate and has ribbed vaulting adorned with floral bosses, as well as an octagonal turret in the northwest angle. To the south of the central tower, there is a narrow room from 15th century alterations, along with an adjacent wall-gallery that has small windows. The southern tower, originally two storeys but raised by Humphrey Stafford, contained the lord’s apartments, with fireplaces and corbels still in place.
