Description

The Iron Bridge over the River Rhymney is a 19th-century single-carriageway bridge featuring two spans made of cast iron. It is supported by four central T-section piers that carry segmental arches. The central spandrels are adorned with circles, while the outer spandrels display half circles, reminiscent of the Iron Bridge in Shropshire. One of the arches on the downstream side is marked with the date 1829 in relief, while the upstream side has a partially missing arch. The abutments are constructed from coursed stone and are splayed outwards. The deck is covered with cast iron plates, which are now overgrown with grass, and it features a parapet made of cast iron railings topped with spear finials. Above the abutments, the parapets extend as white-brick walls that curve outwards and end in round piers, most of which have collapsed. On the left bank, the abutment includes an arched culvert, with the arch ring intact on the downstream side but collapsed on the upstream side.
