Description
The Iron Bridge over the River Rhymney is a single-carriageway, two-span cast iron bridge. It features four central T-section piers that support segmental arches carrying the deck. The central spandrels are adorned with circles, while the outer spandrels display half circles, resembling the Iron Bridge in Shropshire. One arch on the downstream side is marked with the date 1829 in relief, while the upstream side has a partly missing arch. The abutments are constructed of coursed stone and are splayed outwards. The deck is covered with cast iron plates, which are now overgrown with grass, and it has a parapet made of cast iron railings topped with spear finials. Above the abutments, the parapets extend as white-brick walls that curve outwards and end in round piers, most of which have collapsed. On the left bank, the abutment includes an arched culvert, with the arch ring intact on the downstream side and collapsed on the upstream side.
