Description

The Gatehouse is a three-storey building, roughcast but designed to resemble stone, with a plinth and a roof that is not visible from the street. It features two bays, with the left bay set forward and the entrance located on the right side. On the ground floor, there is a tripartite sash window with 6 over 9 panes to the left, and to the right, a doorway framed by two Greek Doric columns in antis, leading to a recessed arched doorway with a six-panel door, of which the top four panels are glazed. Above the doorway is a fanlight, and there are five steps leading up to it. A small sash window with marginal glazing is located on the left within the porch.

The first floor has a tripartite sash window with 9 over 9 panes to the left and a projecting canted oriel window on the right, which is believed to have been added between 1919 and 1939. This oriel features 9 over 9 sashes flanked by 6 over 6 sashes. The second floor contains two tripartite sashes with 3 over 6 panes. There is a modillion cornice and a parapet stack with a moulded cap on the left gable. The left return of the building has a narrow sash window with marginal glazing on each floor, similar to those in the porch, likely dating from around 1900. The rear elevation has not been seen.

Inside, the building has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, but it still retains some 18th and 19th-century joinery and plasterwork. A notable feature is the fine top-lit open-well staircase, which appears to date from the mid-18th century. This staircase includes a panelled dado, a ramped moulded pine handrail, and two turned balusters with knops on each step. A rear extension was added around 1987.
