Description

Nos. 20, 22 and 24 Brecon Road form a group of three buildings dating from the likely 18th century, built of squared rock-faced sandstone with yellow brick and stucco dressings, and covered by a natural slate roof. They have a double-depth plan with entrances on the left side of each building. The buildings are three storeys high.

External evidence suggests that No. 20 remains a single bay shop with a house above it, while Nos. 22 and 24 are now joined as one property with a double-fronted house above, although this is likely a later alteration. All three shopfronts are distinct but retain their original character. No. 20 has a door to the left and a 3-light display window with slim timber mullions, pilasters with bracketed and gabled caps, and a recessed house entry to the right. No. 22 features a recessed central entry flanked by single-light display windows, where the pilaster caps no longer have gables. No. 24 has an off-centre door with two lights on the left and one on the right, with the gabled caps still present. A recessed 4-panel house door is situated between Nos. 22 and 24.

The first and second floors have brick quoins and a band separating the floors. Each house has a canted, two-storey bay window with triple 2 over 2 pane sashes, with colonettes between the panes; the second-floor windows are shorter and have arched heads. These bay windows have stucco decoration, brick quoins, and an upper section that projects above the eaves line. On the first floor, above the house doors, are plain 2 over 2 pane sashes with brick dressings. The building has cogged brick eaves and a plain roof with stacks located only on the rear wall, of which some are missing.

The rear elevation was not inspected, and the interior remains unexamined, except for the shop which is plain.
