Description
Nos. 20-26 Brecon Road form a group of buildings, likely dating to the 18th century, constructed of squared rock-faced sandstone with yellow brick and stucco dressings, and covered by a natural slate roof. The buildings have a double-depth plan with entries on the left side. They are three storeys high. External details suggest that No. 20 retains a single-bay shop with accommodation above, while Nos. 22 and 24 are now combined into a single premises with a double-fronted house above, a probable later alteration. The three shopfronts are distinctive, though consistent in character. No. 20 features a door to the left and a three-light display window with slim timber mullions, pilasters with bracketed and gabled caps, and a recessed house entry to the right. No. 22 has a recessed central entry flanked by single-light display windows, with pilaster caps that have lost their gabled detailing. No. 24 has an off-centre door accompanied by two lights on the left and one on the right, retaining gabled caps. A recessed four-panel house door is situated between Nos. 22 and 24.
The first and second floors exhibit brick quoins and a decorative band marking the floor levels. Each house includes a two-storey canted bay featuring triple 2 over 2 pane sash windows separated by colonettes, with the second-floor windows being shorter and having arched heads. These bays are decorated with stucco and brick quoins, the upper sections projecting above the eaves line. The first floor displays plain 2 over 2 pane sash windows, set within brick dressings, above the house entrances. The building has cogged brick eaves and a plain roof with chimney stacks located solely on the rear wall, with some of those original stacks now removed. The rear elevation was not inspected, and the interior, with the exception of a plain shop, was also not inspected at the time of resurvey.
