Description
This is a row of three shops and dwellings, dating from the 18th century, forming part of a larger group with Nos 20 and 24 Brecon Road. The buildings are constructed of squared rock-faced sandstone with yellow brick and stucco dressings, and have natural slate roofs. They are arranged with a double-depth plan and entries on the left-hand side.
The buildings are three storeys high. External features suggest that No. 20 retains a single-bay shop with a house above, while Nos. 22 and 24 appear to have been combined into one larger premises with a double-fronted house above, likely a later alteration. The three shopfronts are distinct but retain a consistent character. No. 20 has a door to the left and a three-light display window with slim timber mullions, pilasters with bracketed and gabled caps, and a recessed house entry to the right. No. 22 features a recessed central entry flanked by single-light display windows, and the pilaster caps are no longer gabled. No. 24 has an off-centre door with two lights on the left and one on the right, the gabled caps survive. A recessed four-panel house door is set between the shops.
The first and second floors are defined by brick quoins and a decorative band between floors. Each house has a canted two-storey bay with triple two-over-two pane sash windows with colonettes between; the second-floor sashes are shorter and have arched heads. The canted bays are decorated with stucco and brick quoins, with the upper parts projecting above the eaves line. On the first floor, above the house doors, are plain two-over-two pane sashes with brick dressings. The building has cogged brick eaves and a plain roof with stacks located only on the rear wall, though some have been removed. A gable elevation shows sashes for the rear rooms of No. 24. The rear elevation remains uninspected. The interior was not inspected at resurvey, except for the shop area, which is plain.
