Description
13 Market Street consists of a group of buildings, numbered 11 to 17, that were likely constructed partly from stone rubble and partly timber framed, finished in stucco and painted, with natural slate roofs and red brick chimneys. The buildings feature a narrow bay gable end to the street and are two storeys high, with a total of seven windows arranged in a pattern of 2 + 2 + 2 + 1.
These structures are notable in Abergavenny for their inset pavement, which is raised on a low slate plinth beneath the first-floor jetty, providing covered access to the shops. This design is an early example and may have initially lacked the posts that now support the upper floor, especially if the shopfronts were originally set back. The shopfronts, dating from the late 19th century or early 20th century, have been altered over time. Above, the first floor is supported by seven plain iron columns, which carry a large rolled steel joist (RSJ) that can be seen in historical photographs.
The windows are all 6 over 6 sashes, likely installed during a significant repair to the block around the mid-20th century. The buildings feature four gables with plain bargeboards, with the gable for No. 17 being narrower. The roofs are plain, with stacks located on the rear gables.
The rear elevation has not been inspected, and the interior has not been thoroughly examined during the resurvey, except for the ground floor shop, which has chamfered cross beams that support the first floor.
