Description
The Kings Head Hotel is a three-storey building constructed from red sandstone rubble, faced in roughcast and painted above the ground floor. It has a double depth plan and features four windows, arranged as one on the left and three on the right. On the left side, there is a late medieval gothic arch made of dressed stone that provides access to a yard at the rear; this arch is believed to date from the 15th century and has a roll moulding with a steeply pointed shape. The three bays on the ground floor to the right, which include the entrance to the public house, have segmentally arched openings. These bays feature late 20th-century windows with transoms flanking a plain door. The original front was obscured by a more typical late 19th-century timber pub frontage with arched windows, which was recently revealed and tidied up. The upper floors previously had casement windows, but these have now been replaced with 6 over 6 pane sashes on the first floor, except for the left-hand window, which is 3 over 6 panes. The upper floor windows are all smaller and also feature 3 over 6 panes. The building has deep eaves and a low-pitched roof with brick stacks on either gable, one of which may serve No. 59. The rear elevation has not been inspected.
Inside, the ground floor is now a single bar space without any clearly datable features. The ceiling has a mixture of beams, some of which are stop-chamfered, but these are likely not original. There is also a stair at the right rear that appears to be a partly 18th-century design.
