Description
58 Cross Street is a three-storey building with a smooth rendered and painted front, topped by a natural slate roof. It features a double depth plan with the entrance located on the right side. The facade has two windows, and the upper floors are accentuated by giant quoin pilasters. A photograph from 1910 indicates that there were also second floor and cill bands. The ground floor includes a recessed central entry shopfront with plate glass display windows, alongside a panelled house door to the right. The fascia has been reduced across the entire width, exposing the cills above. The first floor windows are 2 over 2 pane sashes with keyed heads, while smaller similar windows are found on the floor above. The roof has a moderate pitch and features a tall red brick stack on the right gable. The rear elevation has not been inspected.
Inside, the building reveals its origins as a late 16th century jettied house, retaining the jetty post on the ground floor to the left, as well as cross-beams and what appears to be a late 16th century fireplace at the rear on the ground floor. The upper floors were not seen during the resurvey.
