Description
Nos. 11-17 (odd) Market Street are two-storey buildings likely constructed partly of stone rubble and partly timber framed, rendered in stucco and painted. They feature natural slate roofs and red brick stacks, with a narrow bay gable end facing the street. The buildings have a total of seven windows arranged as 2 + 2 + 2 + 1. They are notable in Abergavenny for their inset pavement raised on a low slate plinth beneath the first-floor jetty, providing covered access to the shops. This design is an early example and may have originally lacked the supporting posts that are now necessary for the upper floor, especially if the shopfronts were set back.
The shopfronts, which date from the late 19th century or early 20th century, have been altered over time. The first floor is supported by seven plain iron columns, which hold up a large rolled steel joist (RSJ) visible in old photographs. The windows are all 6 over 6 sashes, likely from a significant repair to the block in the mid-20th century. The buildings have four gables with plain bargeboards, and the gable for No. 17 is narrower. The roofs are plain with stacks on the rear gables.
The right return of the building features a small paned shopfront with one window to the right. There is a plain door with a blind recess above it, followed by a 6 over 6 pane sash on both floors. The early 19th-century rear wing has three windows, including a projecting bay with 2 over 2 pane sashes flanked by 1 over 1 panes, a door, and a 6 over 6 pane sash, along with a later addition. The upper floor has a 6 over 6 pane sash and two 8 over 8 pane sashes, with a low pitch roof and a red brick stack. The rear elevation has not been inspected. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey.
