Description
15 Market Street consists of a row of buildings, numbered 11 to 17, likely built partly of stone rubble and partly timber framed, rendered in stucco and painted, with natural slate roofs and red brick stacks. The buildings have a narrow bay gable end to the street and are two storeys high with a total of seven windows arranged as 2 + 2 + 2 + 1. They are notable in Abergavenny for their inset pavement, which is raised on a low slate plinth under the first floor jetty, providing covered access to the premises. This design is an early feature and may have originally lacked the supporting posts that became necessary for the upper floor, especially if the shopfronts were set back. The shopfronts, which date from the late 19th century or early 20th century, have been altered. The first floor is supported by seven plain iron columns, which carry a large rolled steel joist (RSJ) visible in old photographs. The windows are all 6 over 6 sashes, likely installed during a major repair to the block in the mid 20th century. The buildings have four gables with plain bargeboards, with the gable for No. 17 being narrower. The roofs are plain, featuring stacks on the rear gables. The rear elevation has not been inspected. The interior has not been inspected at the resurvey, except for the ground floor shop, which has few visible historic features.
