Description
14 St. James' Square is a two-storey house with an attic, dating from the 18th century. The front is rendered and painted, topped with a Welsh slate roof and red brick chimney stacks. The main part of the house runs parallel to the street, with a rear outshut. It features three windows, with a central entrance that has a part-glazed door and a hood or porch that extends over the roofs of the flanking canted bays. These bays contain 2 over 2 pane sash windows, flanked by 1 over 1 pane sashes. The right-hand bay is a post-World War II addition made after the conversion of the garage into two houses. The first floor has later 19th-century 2 over 2 pane sash windows, and there is a single gabled dormer in the roof. A large lateral stack is located on the left side, with a ridge stack on the right. The rear elevation is not visible.
Internally, the house has undergone significant alterations, and during the resurvey, no ancient features were noted, except possibly for 17th-century beams and principal rafters, which are all boxed-in.
