Description
Usk Bridge, also known as Abergavenny Bridge, is a Grade II* listed seven-arch road bridge made of cut sandstone. It features mostly segmental, voussoired arches, with the central and northern arches on the downstream side being more acutely pointed. The southernmost arch has been rebuilt, including its arch ring and keystone. The bridge has pointed cutwaters and a ramped deck. At the Abergavenny end, there are two low flood arches with a stepped abutment between them, as well as an embanked causeway at both ends.
The bridge has been widened on the upstream side, where it has more regularly shaped segmental arches, and the cutwaters between are stepped up beneath the rebuilt parapet. Corbelled brackets on this side suggest that a railing was once present. The low parapets have a flat coping. On the downstream side, the parapet continues along the Llanfoist bank up to The Bridge End Inn and along the Abergavenny bank to the gate leading to the riverside footpath. However, upstream, the parapet does not extend beyond the length of the bridge.
