Description
Nos 11 and 13 Hereford Road are two-storey buildings constructed of red sandstone ashlar and rough stone, topped with a Welsh slate roof. Built in a castle style, some of their original character has been diminished by re-roofing. The south side features a five-bay elevation that ramps at the base, with the outer bays being slightly wider and projecting. A wide band runs along the first floor. At the center, there is a full-height Gothic arched entrance recess with a wide doorway, which now has a modern door and is topped by a lunette iron grill. The entrance arch is supported by two slightly recessed splayed piers, with an impost moulding that continues with the main band. Low stone seats are positioned within the entrance on both sides. The stone infill likely replaced the entrance gate of the Gaol after its closure in 1869. Small 2 over 2 pane sash windows have taken the place of the original arrow loops. The overall roof is hipped with overhanging eaves.
On the right return, there are two 6 over 6 pane sash windows on the ground floor and one above, although the frames of the previous windows are still visible. The rear elevation has not been seen, but it is reported to retain a stained glass overlight that shows the original design for the prison.
The interior has not been seen during the resurvey but is known to have contained the porters' lodge and the condemned cells, which are said to survive to some extent.
