Description

The building at 1 Highgate Terrace comprises a group of four three-story, one-window red brick cottages, with a two-story, two-window former gaol attached to the right-hand end. The cottages have renewed slate roofs, boarded eaves, and modern brick chimney stacks, with a black painted plinth to the former gaol. They feature small-pane sash windows with voussoirs, with 15 panes on the second floor and 20 panes on the first and ground floors. Camber-headed entrances have boarded doors. Between numbers 3 and 4 is a round-arched entry leading to a tunnel passage, now fitted with a metal door and a plain fanlight.

The former gaol has an old slate roof with a brick stack and part slate hanging. It contains a 15-pane sash window on the first floor and a 20-pane sash window below, accompanied by a similar entrance. The left end of the gaol is largely shale-covered, with the upper section rendered where a former weaving loft door was blocked. The right gable end has a pebbledash finish, and the gable end of the gaol is slate-hung, with an attached boarded lean-to shed. A colourwashed passage leads to a shale rear elevation with brick dressings. The rear of the gaol is constructed with shale above rubble, and features small-pane metal-frame windows.

The second floor runs the length of the building and was formerly used as a weaving loft. Numbers 2 and 3 have been combined into a single residence. The gaol’s interior retains two cells, each with barred windows, which were used to detain Chartists. Policemen’s accommodation is located above the cells. Included are brick privy lean-tos attached to numbers 1 and 3, a later one to number 4, and small cellar windows. Boarded loft openings conceal windows.
