Description
The former flannel mill is a three-storey building, with the lower level built into the bank. It features rubble masonry with quoins, a modern flat roof, and cambered stock brick voussoirs above 9-pane hopper windows. The main elevation faces the river, where the lower masonry is coursed and has a slightly battered base. A vertical break rising to the second floor level to the right of the third bay indicates that the mill has been extended at the downstream end and raised by one storey, likely around 1850, coinciding with the construction of Short Bridge. At the base of this extension, there is a segmental-headed opening with rubble voussoirs, which is probably a spillway.
To the south, there is a largely collapsed rubble outbuilding near the weir, along with one brick infilled doorway at the top of the main end wall. The two-storey, four-bay elevation facing Short Bridge Street has boarded-up ground floor openings. The rear elevation has nine bays with boarded eaves and some boarded-up openings, as well as central openings at the left end. The building was disused at the time of inspection in March 1988, although the interior has been partly converted into a gym.
