Description
The Punch House public house is located on a corner site with its main front facing southwest. The building features a stucco façade, chamfered quoins, and a half hipped roof covered with Welsh slate. It consists of three storeys and has three windows, with the second-floor windows being smaller. The ground floor includes a central doorway with a hood supported by brackets, leading to a modern glazed door. This doorway is flanked by tripartite sash windows, with the left-hand window being a later addition. The right-hand ground floor window and all first-floor windows have keystones. Most windows are six over six pane sashes, except for the left first-floor window, which has French doors with an overlight that opens onto an iron balcony. The name of the public house, "THE PUNCH HOUSE," is displayed in gilt letters above the first-floor windows. The top floor features three over three pane sashes. The roof has a hip on the left side, with a stack to the right of the door and another stack at the right on the old property division line.
This elevation is continuous with what was The Bull Inn, which has a slightly lower roofline. The left return, or northwest elevation, is also stucco with quoins and has three window bays, with the two right-hand bays being closer together. The ground floor includes a door on the left with a small hood, a tripartite sash window, and part-glazed double doors with an overlight on the right. The first floor has three keyed two over two pane sashes, and the upper floor contains two three over three pane sashes with a blind panel to the right. The public house name appears above the first floor as before. The roof on this elevation is overall hipped, with a stack positioned between the first and second bays.
The ground floors of The Punch House and The Bull Inn have been combined and opened up, resulting in altered planning and few historic features remaining. There is a studded door made of oak planks between the two establishments, which is claimed to be the door of the Town Goal from 1705 to 1807, although its provenance is not confirmed. The upper floors were not visible during the inspection.
