Description

The Punch House is a three-storey public house, largely dating from the 19th century. The front elevation is roughcast and painted, with a Welsh slate roof. The ground floor slightly projects, with a lean-to slate roof extending the full width and featuring two three-light plate glass sash windows. A modern glazed door is centrally positioned. Above are two windows on the first floor, with space for a former nameboard between them, and three windows on the second floor. All these windows are two-over-two pane sashes.

The north-west return elevation is stuccoed with quoins and has three window bays, the two right-hand bays being closer together. The ground floor features a door to the left, a small hood above it, a tripartite sash window and part-glazed double doors with an overlight to the right. The first floor has three keyed two-over-two pane sashes, and the second floor has two three-over-three pane sashes with a blind panel to the right. The public house name is positioned above the first-floor windows, as on the front elevation. This elevation has a hipped roof with a stack between the first and second bays.

The right return has a blind gable wall and a two-storey rear wing with various small windows. The rear elevation was not visible.

The ground floors of the original two public houses have been joined and opened up, resulting in altered internal planning and few surviving historic features. A studded oak door, claimed to be from the Town Goal (1705-1807), is present between the two spaces, although its provenance is uncertain. The upper floors were not inspected.
