Description
The Swimming Pool and Gymnasium at West Monmouth School is a two-storey building constructed of hard red brick with a Welsh slate roof featuring ridge tiles and a stone band at the first-floor cill level. This five-bay structure clearly reflects its function through its architectural design. The three central bays are distinguished by pilasters, with the ground floor being blind and featuring a segmental arcade. The upper floor has large windows with segmental heads that fully occupy the central three bays, while the outer bays are also blind. The windows are wooden framed with three lights and two mullions, and each pane is divided into four sections. The end gabled elevation has stepped buttresses and a stone verge, while the opposite gable end features another large window with a flat head.
Inside, the building remains largely unaltered, with a tiled swimming pool located on the ground floor supported by a ceiling held up by steel girders. The gymnasium above is simple, featuring a wooden floor and a panelled ceiling.
