Description
St. James's Hall is a building constructed from squared rock-faced limestone rubble with freestone, likely using Bath stone for the dressings, and topped with a Welsh slate roof. The structure features a single hall on the upper floor, with offices located below. It has its gable end facing Hanbury Road and the longer side facing St James's Field. The design reflects an Edwardian style with some Art Nouveau influences.
The main elevation includes a central entrance flanked by windows, with additional windows illuminating the staircase on the first floor and a large attic window in the gable above. A gabled porch features recessed double doors and iron gates. The gable is adorned with coping and kneelers, showcasing a stepped tripartite design. The windows are rectangular, three-light with chamfered stone mullions set in plain frames. A heavy modillion cornice runs along the central gable, which is supported by two small buttresses and topped with a coped pinnacle. The buttresses are held up by double brackets, and a modillion cornice connects them. The gable also features a four-light window with mullions and a transom in an ashlar frame, topped with a semi-circular head and a large keystone.
At the end of the main roof ridge, there is a small gablet with vertical timbering and plain bargeboards. The side elevation is two storeys high, with two three-light mullion and transom windows on the ground floor, along with smaller windows. Above these are four additional three-light windows similar to those on the front. A small two-light window for the staircase is located at the left end, while a doorway with a tented hood provides direct access to the upper floor hall at the right end. The roof is plain, featuring a central octagonal ventilator. The end gable elevation is partially obscured by a single-storey red brick extension. Above this extension, there is a four-light window in the gable end of the main hall, with vertical timbering above it. The main gable is finished with a bargeboard.
Inside, the upper floor consists of an open hall with a plain boarded roof supported by principal rafters. The lower floor offices were not accessible during the resurvey in April 1997.
