Description

35 Commercial Street is a Co-operative department store constructed in Portland stone ashlar in the art-deco style. The building is a rectangular block aligned with the street and features a central entrance and staircase. It has three storeys and three main bays, with an additional narrow bay to the right. The ground floor consists entirely of shopfronts with black marble piers, fascia, and glazed doors, although the shop windows are currently covered with security boards.

On the first floor, there are triple steel framed windows, with four light windows on either side of a central recessed feature. This feature includes two octagonal lotus-capped columns that support a recess with a window behind. Flanking this central feature are two additional four light windows. The centre bay is slightly set forward and displays a banner with a central cartouche and a carved wheatsheaf, rising into the second storey where it features a wave motif. The second floor has double three light windows, while the centre bay is blind. The additional bay to the right has a narrow four light window on the first floor and a three light window above. The building has a parapet, and the roof is not visible from the street. The rear elevation has not been seen, but maps indicate it has a central projection for the staircase.

The interior was not available for inspection during the last survey in October 1996. However, the ground floor is visible through the glass doors and is open plan from the 1960s, with the original staircase still surviving at the rear.
