Description
The George Public House is an Edwardian Baroque style building constructed from red brick, featuring orange glazed bricks on the ground floor, ashlar dressings, and a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and has frontages on both Commercial Street and Market Street, with an entrance located on the canted corner.
The elevation facing Commercial Street consists of three bays. The ground floor is defined by a plinth and strip pilasters that frame the bays, which contain large square windows with etched glass, likely modern replacements. The right half of the central bay features a double door with a rectangular light above it, flanked by its own pilasters. A stone band above carries the capitals, with contemporary lettering inscribed between. The pilasters extend to the first floor, where they flank paired windows with brick mullions and top opening lights. Corinthian type capitals support a stone entablature. The centre features an oriel window, supported by a large decorated corbel, with a two-light window that has a stone mullion set forward and a stone frame. The second floor mirrors the outer windows but lacks pilasters, while the central window is of the Venetian type. A projecting stone modillion cornice, broken in the centre, leads to a shaped gable, and the roof is plain. The canted corner originally had a doorway, now blocked, with a keyed head and an open segmental pediment. Above this is a stone cartouche, followed by the entablature; the second floor is blind, but the cornice is rounded.
The elevation on Market Street features two additional bays, designed similarly. The ground floor includes pilasters, a bar window, and a doorway. The first floor has three windows arranged in a 2:1 configuration, while the upper floor contains two windows with a gap in the centre.
The interior of the ground floor has been modified to feature a late 20th-century 'Victorian' reproduction bar.
