Description
Nos. 2A, 4 and 6 Commercial Street form a formal late Georgian terrace of three-storey buildings, currently used for commercial purposes but originally designed as shops with living accommodation above. The buildings are rendered and painted, likely over brick, and feature Welsh slate roofs, although some have been replaced with artificial slates. The facade consists of a 1:6:1 bay arrangement, with the single bays set slightly forward. The left-hand single bay contains an entrance to Pontypool Market, which features a Tudor style archway made of limestone rubble with yellow Ebbw Vale brick dressings, dated 1894. The ground floor includes two triple bay shops in the center and a single bay shop, all with late 20th-century shopfronts and fascias. There is a cill band at the first floor, which has an arcade of semi-circular arched recesses, each containing a six over six sash window, along with an impost band and double thickness piers for the end bays. The second floor also has a cill band and features three over three sash windows in plain openings. The building is topped with a frieze, eaves, and a plain roof. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey in October 1996.
