Description
Scotmid, located at 6-10 High Street in Penicuik, is a classical department store designed by John Kinross and H O Tarbolton between 1904 and 1905. This two-storey, eight-bay building has an L-shaped plan and is situated on a sloping site to the south. It is constructed from polished sandstone ashlar and features a base course, a corniced band course between the principal and first floors, and a cill course at the first floor. The cornice and balustraded parapet at the first floor have a decorative panel in the center.
The southeast (principal) elevation is pilastered at the ground level. It has modern doors flanking the center, which are set in doorpieces with blind segmental-arched fanlights. To the outer left, there is a modern goods door with a louvered ventilation opening above it, and modern plate glass windows in the remaining bays and at the first floor. A small architraved Renaissance window, supported by a decoratively carved low-relief corbel and surmounted by a dentilled cornice, is located to the outer left. The balustrade is divided by corniced dies topped with urns, and there is a central decorative architraved panel featuring a wreath and bird decoration, which is the co-operative's motif, topped by an obelisk on a segmental pediment.
The east and south elevations are made of rock-faced snecked ashlar gables, but both are obscured by adjacent buildings, specifically 12 High Street and The Railway Tavern to the east. The rear elevation was not seen in 1999, and the interior was also not seen at that time.
The building has modern fenestration and a grey slate piended roof with a lead ridge, along with a flag-pole set at the center. It features cast-iron rainwater goods and coped blocking courses at the gables that sweep up to gablehead stacks, which are corniced and have circular cans.
