Description
The entrance gates and railings at Christ Church date from the 20th century and are located immediately northwest of the church, extending to the southwest corner of the churchyard. The tall and intricately detailed railings are set on a single course of rock-faced limestone blocks. They run north to south in twelve bays, separated by thick square-section posts that feature leafy capitals and tall moulded finials rising from acanthus-leaf bases. The rails are cruciform in section and are positioned on an elevated sill-rail. The top rail has a subsidiary horizontal rail below it, with alternating fleur-de-lis and taller three-lobe foliage finials. At the southern end, there are a pair of rock-faced limestone piers with plinths and chamfered angles, topped with heavy limestone copings that have cardinal gablets adorned with blind trefoils. The paired iron gates match the design of the railings.
