Description
Newtown Bridge features an eastern road arch, known as the Big Arch, constructed from squared ironstone with finely finished ashlar voussoirs forming a wide single segmental arch. The north side of the arch includes a keystone dated 1813 and has eyebrow-like iron ties at the keystone level. Above the arch, there are two parallel stringcourses. Each side has short angled cheek revetments made of cut stone arranged in tumbled courses. The upper stage of the bridge is narrower and is supported by a series of yellow brick semi-circular arches on the north side, though these are largely obscured by overgrowth. The south side has been concealed by later concrete work, which slopes upward from the top of the lower stage, likely for reinforcement. The road has been widened on concrete corbels and features modern metal railings. There is also a concrete pedestrian tunnel from 1965 situated between the arches.
The western arch is narrower and constructed of rock-faced masonry, featuring a round arch with an arch-ring made of yellow brick in five header courses. The keystones are dated 1859, with additional dates from 1861. Rock-faced imposts extend through the tunnel, and there is a stringcourse with a parapet above, topped with moulded terracotta copings. On the south side, the bridge has a large rubble cheek-revetment to the left and a broad, shallower revetment to the right, which has a sloping cemented top that contains the tunnel. On the north side, there is a long sloping cheek-revetment to the right and a shorter revetment on the left.
The arch spans the Ebbw River at the base of a deep ravine, although it is obscured by overgrowth.
