Former Boiler House at Dunlop Semtex Factory

The former Boiler House at the Dunlop Semtex Factory is a Grade II* listed building constructed from reinforced concrete with precast concrete panels, as well as glazed and brickwork walling. It features a high parabolic vaulted rectangle shape with a two-storey gable end facing the road. The structure has transverse arched ribs with panel infill, and the top floor juts out over continuous clerestory glazing on the ground floor.

The outer gable lunette is adorned with diamond-lattice glazing over ribbed infill panels. On the south side elevation, there are four large glazed openings with raised surrounds. The inner gable includes an elevated concrete railway viaduct that leads to first-floor loading doors, supported by wide segmental arches on slender piers. These arches hold a ribbed cantilevered deck for the railway, which originally featured a remarkable metal spiral staircase that has since been removed.

Inside, the upper floor retains longitudinal concrete walls that were used for a trackway fed by gravity-feed coal bunkers. The ground floor has a concrete ceiling that incorporates inclined feeds to central hoppers that served the now-removed boilers. The ceiling is supported by rectangular columns, and there are rear openings under the clerestory leading into a single-storey extension that features circular top-lighting and the base of a metal flue.
