Description
The Berea United Reformed Chapel, dating from 1850, is constructed of ironstone rubble with thin ashlar detailing, and has a modern tiled roof. The three-bay gabled front features round-arched windows on both levels, with ashlar voussoirs and stone sills. The central round-arched doorway has paired doors with tall pointed-arched panels and a large fanlight with intersecting glazing. Six-pane sash windows are located on either side of the door, with intersecting glazing at the head. The upper windows in the outer bays have eight-over-twelve pane sashes with intersecting bars above. The central upper window is larger and has fifteen-over-fifteen pane glazing with intersecting bars. The side elevations feature four bays with rectangular windows on both levels; the left side has been rendered and includes basement windows towards the rear. Large iron tie-plates are visible on the elevations, a result of structural works undertaken between 1878 and 1880. A rear lean-to has been added.
A small forecourt retains low rubble walls topped with cast-iron railings featuring spear finials. Central paired iron gates are set within rock-faced stone piers, which have dressed stone copings.
Inside, a gallery runs around three sides, with deeply canted angles and plain iron posts. The gallery panels have simple four-centred inset mouldings with an applied grained finish, and a deep plastered cove. The gallery also contains benches with high railed backs. Box pews with doors are arranged on the ground floor, facing across the middle rank. The pulpit has a concave centre, with panelling to match the gallery, and side bays with turned balusters, likely added slightly later. An entrance lobby features a window with marginally-paned glass. The rear of the chapel has been partitioned off to create schoolrooms on both floors. This boarded partition cuts across the gallery fronts and allows light to be borrowed through a pair of tall round-arched windows behind the pulpit, which have intersecting glazing. A boarded ceiling, likely added in 1892, suggests the partition was installed subsequently. The tall windows may have been relocated from the exterior rear wall. The schoolrooms themselves are plain. A basement contains a row of plain iron columns and evidence of a former fireplace.
