Description
This is a two-storey U-plan agricultural range, dating from the 18th century, situated at Roundhouse Farm. The building is constructed of local brown ironstone rubble with slate roofs, some of which have been replaced with corrugated sheeting. Several original iron doors and window frames remain, of particular interest as they originated at local works.
The south side of the north wing features altered fenestration and an iron loading platform at an angle to the main block. A three-window section runs south of a vertical masonry joint. On the ground floor, there are three doors and three windows with cambered heads. The first floor has three camber-headed windows; the outer windows have iron-frame glazing, and the centre window has been blocked, with an iron loading platform at an angle. The ground floor has a central camber-headed doorway flanked by camber-headed windows with iron-frame glazing.
To the north of this section is a longer area with three first-floor camber-headed loading doors in iron frames. The ground floor has two visible doorways; one is a later insertion, while the other is camber-headed with an iron frame. Four camber-headed windows with iron glazing are present, and a red brick lean-to obscures an additional door and window.
The north side of the south wing features mainly later inserted openings, along with small square windows at the eaves, and a camber-headed ground-floor window to the left. The gable end has been rebuilt and includes a first-floor doorway. The south side originally had two small windows on each floor, one first-floor window having been blocked.
The rear of the main range has small first-floor windows and two blocked loading doors, with a ground-floor window to the north and ruins of a bull-pen to the south. The north side of the north wing is largely obscured by later lean-to additions.
The south end of the main range and the south cross-wing have roofs with wooden trusses; the remainder of the building incorporates a rare iron truss construction, featuring tie-beam trusses with raking struts. The roof hips also utilize iron trusses, with slates wired to iron rafters. Floors are supported on L-section iron beams. The ground floor of the main range has three transverse arches through which iron tie-bars are built. A former pigsty is located in the southwest corner. In the south wing, there was a former stable with a cobbled floor and iron tethering. A wooden crane is located near a gable loading door on the first floor. The east end of the north wing was formerly used as cottages, with accommodation on both floors.
