Description
The Vicarage is a house dating from the 18th century, constructed of squared rubble with ashlar quoins and window surrounds. The upper storey and gables are hung with small black slates. The roof is of artificial slate in a complex plan, with a central valley. A large rubble chimney stack is set to the right of the centre gable of the east elevation. Projecting eaves are finished with plain bargeboards.
The east front, which faces a lawned garden, is three bays wide. The centre bay has a steep slate-hung gable, featuring a wide upper five-light casement window that is slightly bracketed. Below are two large-paned sash windows. The right bay is lower and slightly set back, with the roof sweeping over a rectangular bay window, which is flush with the gable, and featuring a tripartite sash with a three-light transomed side light. To the right, set back, is a small bracketed upper two-light casement with leaded glazing. The left bay has no slate-hanging and contains tripartite sash windows to each storey.
The north elevation has a double gable. The first floor has two twin-light sash windows, with a similar sash to the ground floor on the right and a single-light sash to the left. The west side contains the entrance, set into an angle with a gabled wing. The left bay has upper slating and a bracketed leaded casement to the first floor, with a small window below. The central two bays project, with a hipped angle to the roof and rubble facing to both storeys. An entrance is located in a narrow return angle, facing north, and is sheltered by a bracketed timber canopy. The west-facing ground floor has an ashlar cross-window, with a two-light casement above. To the right is a tall ashlar mullion and transom stair window of eight lights.
A projecting gabled wing has upper slate-hanging and a bracketed five-light casement to the first floor; an ashlar cross-window is located below. The south side of the wing has an upper three-light bracketed casement. A single-storey projection in the angle between the wing and main house has a west-facing cross-window above.
The south gable has a projecting breast of a truncated chimney.
The east front contains the main rooms, including a dining room to the centre, a drawing room to the right, and a kitchen to the left, with a stair hall behind. The drawing room has a wide fireplace with a timber mantlepiece set in a segmentally-headed recess. The dining room also has an original timber chimneypiece, with flanking arched recesses featuring panelled dados. A dog-leg stair has turned balusters.
