Description

Chapel Farm is a single-storey building that is built into a hillside. It features rubble walls that are massive and battered towards the original upper part, topped with a slate roof. A small rubble chimney stack is located near the center of the ridge. All windows have been replaced. The entrance front faces north, with the original house forming the two right bays. These bays have two windows positioned towards the right end, with the right window being smaller. The rebuilt cowhouse end forms the two left bays, which are slightly set back, featuring a door to the right and a window to the left. There are two rooflights on the front roofslope.

At the rear, there is a wing with a slightly lower ridgeline, which includes a 20th-century conservatory set in the southeast angle of the main house. The two left bays of the rear elevation (original house) have two windows, with a rooflight above.

The interior plan consists of a hall with an inner parlour and a downslope cow-house, which was rebuilt in the late 20th century as a kitchen. The hall features two pairs of full crucks and a 17th-century ceiling made up of massive beams with joists that have ogee stop-chamfers. The ceiling joists have been slightly raised. A large 16th-century stone fireplace is present, with monolithic chamfered jambs and an unusually massive chamfered monolithic lintel, which is partially obscured by the ceiling that postdates the fireplace. There is a winding chimney stair to the left of the fireplace with later timber treads. To the right of the fireplace is the original entry, which is blocked, and has a plain heavy timber frame. Between the hall and parlour is a post and panel partition, with the posts featuring stop-chamfers. The small unheated parlour has 17th-century ceiling joists with stop-chamfers that have long tongues. Crucks are visible from the upper floor, showcasing massive collars and paired purlins.
