Description
Swffryd-ganol is a two-storey farmhouse built in rubble, designed in an L-plan layout. The angle of the building is enclosed by a drystone rubble wall that borders a small front garden to the south. The roof is made of local stone tiles, which are currently being reinstated. The main section of the farmhouse runs east to west, with a projecting two-bay range on the left side.
At the west end, there is a broad rendered chimney stack, while the east gable features a stone stack, and the south gable has a red brick stack. The south-facing elevation has two bays, with two-light four-pane casement windows above four-pane windows, all featuring cambered stone voussoired heads and stone sills. The east-facing elevation also consists of two bays, with upper windows being two-light 12-pane casements set under the eaves. There is a similar window in the center of the ground floor, but it has a brick head, indicating it was originally a door. To the extreme right, there is a door with a cambered stone voussoired head.
The west elevation of the wing has two ground floor windows, although their lintels have collapsed. A single-storey lean-to made of rubble is located against the gable end of the main range. Vague joints are visible on the lower part of the gable wall, which may relate to a lost lower range, possibly a byre. The rear (north) elevation features a small window on the right and a broad outshut on the left under a catslide roof.
Inside, the living room at the west end of the main range has a massive fireplace opening with a large iron grate and stone flags on the floor. To the right of the fireplace is a chimney stair with timber treads, and the door to the stair has a segmental chamfered timber frame from the early 17th century. There are also two stop-chamfered beams. The parlour at the east end has had its ceiling removed and is accessed via a planked door. The south room in the wing features a 19th-century fireplace, and its ceiling has also been removed. The roof structure of the main range appears to be from the 19th century, with simple collar trusses.
