Description
Gwaun-y-bara is a two-storey house, likely dating to the 18th century, originally composed of five bays of unequal width, with the central three bays forming a hall and the outer bays serving as a parlour and kitchen. The house has roughcast walls painted white. It features a slate roof with a brick stack on the right side, an external stack on the left, and a large, stepped stack set back on the right side. A porch with a hipped roof of stone tiles originally sheltered the centrally placed doorway, which has a segmental head and a half-lit boarded door. Late 19th-century sash windows, set within original openings and with contemporary brick sills, are present in the right-hand section of the house, which now functions as a Mountain Ranger Centre. The right gable end has a small stair window to the left and an inserted boarded door to the right.
The rear elevation is dominated by a full-height gabled projection housing the staircase. This section has late 19th-century three-light casement windows, and to the left, a large stack serves the hall fireplace. A cottage, originally located to the left, was almost entirely rebuilt between 2008 and 2009, retaining the appearance and layout of the earlier building.
The interior of the cottage was completely rebuilt after a fire around 2008-2009. The interior of the Mountain Ranger Centre retains a stone fireplace and staircase to the right of the hall fireplace, including a recess positioned at mid-height.
