Description
Gelli Wastad is a two-storey, three-window Georgian house dating from the 18th century, with a single-storey wing to the east. The front features a bow-fronted single-storey bay on the left with a flat roof. The house is rendered and whitened beneath a stone tile roof, with rendered end stacks and a ridge stack to the right of the centre. There is also an end stack on the east wing. The front elevation is not symmetrical, but the windows on the upper and lower storeys are aligned. To the left of centre, there is a six-panel front door set under a round arch. The house has horned sash windows throughout, featuring narrow glazing bars, stone sills, and flat heads. The bow-fronted bay on the left has three 12-pane sash windows. To the right of the door is another 12-pane sash, followed by a 16-pane sash. The upper storey has three 16-pane sash windows. The east wing includes a panelled door with an overlight on the left and a window on the right.
The east gable end has two windows offset to the right above the wing. The rear of the house is sharply cut into the bank, and there are unroofed remains of outbuildings, including a washroom with a basin and fireplace. The rear elevation features a tall stair light towards the right under a round head with multi-pane glazing, along with a sash window towards the centre of the wall.
Inside, the front door opens into a stair hall that has a large basket arch with moulded plasterwork at the centre. A wide open-well staircase leads to the rear, featuring a turned and swept wooden handrail and decorated tread ends. The stairlight has panelled, splayed jambs. The main reception room is accessed from the west side of the stair hall and includes a hanging rail and panelled shutters, along with a small fireplace surrounded by dark grey stone. From the stair hall, a passage with a flagstone floor runs east along the length of the house, with reception rooms on the right and smaller rooms and cupboards on the left. There is a small extension at the west end of the rear. The kitchen is now located in the single-storey wing and has narrow joists.
