Description
The White Hart Inn is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay building dating from the early 20th century, with an additional bay to the north, likely used for publican’s accommodation. It is constructed of rough snecked stone with larger quoins, topped by a slate roof that is hipped on the left side. A large rear wing extends from the main building, with a hipped end and a north side built of brick. There are two truncated brick stacks, one rising from the ridge to the right of the centre and a larger external stack to the south end, which is situated within a canted bay at ground floor level.
Timber-framed gablets are present on the outer bays of the inn. The upper window to the right is a half-dormer, its frame slightly raised and supported on corbels, while brackets support the eaves of the gablet. Ground floor windows have chamfered stone sills and slate-hung lintels with drip moulds above, featuring small circular bosses where slates are fixed. Large wooden windows are prominent, with four-light windows with a transom on the right and three-light windows with a transom to the lower storey only. The central front entrance is framed by an ornate doorcase of pale stone, with mouldings and chamfers to the jambs and a high, shouldered hoodmould. Planked double doors, complete with strap hinges under a segmental head, lead into the inn. The hoodmould displays a hart in relief standing on a festoon, and below is the date 1914 in Roman script. Two narrow six-pane windows are positioned above the doorway at first floor level.
The north bay incorporates a second doorway, also within an elaborate doorcase that includes flanking windows. Planked double doors with strap hinges are topped by a square head. A high, stepped hoodmould depicts a hart standing on a festoon with the date below, all in relief. The flanking six-pane windows feature stone sills and slate-hung lintels. A narrow six-pane window is to the left, and a three-light window is to the right at first floor level.
A boundary wall runs from the southeast angle of the inn and includes a large dressed doorway with a segmental head.
Inside, a small canted vestibule leads to a door straight ahead and another to the left. The bar is located to the right and is polygonal, faced in polished oak planking with further panelling and coloured glazing above. To the left of the entrance, is a seating area with a fireplace in a canted bay at the south end, with curved brackets supporting the ceiling. The sides of the canted bay feature oak wainscot planking and three-light windows above, with square quarries and coloured glazing. A narrow cast iron fireplace is centrally placed and features a bowed oak mantelpiece. Oak shelves are fixed to the walls at a high level, supported by carved brackets. Two further full-width units extend to the rear. Very wide openings separate the units, with thick square piers supporting the ceilings and the lower levels faced in polished oak planking. Similar wainscot planking is found in other areas. The central unit has a fixed table incorporating two square piers, all oak planked. Toilets are accessed to the left with half-lit doors featuring curved glazing bars and coloured glass. Double doors provide exit to the rear, also with coloured glazing.
