Description

The stable and coach-house courtyard ranges located to the north of Ruperra Castle date from the 19th century and consist of two-storey structures arranged around a courtyard. The buildings feature roughcast elevations and slate roofs, with small-pane casement windows throughout, primarily in two-light configurations, some with transoms. A central carriage entry is tunnel vaulted, topped with a tapered cupola that has a clock face on the outer side and a domed top with a weathervane. The entrance is secured by curved-topped wooden gates.

The stables occupy the west range and extend around part of the south range, while the coach-houses are situated in the east and north ranges. The remaining section of the south range includes blacksmiths and repair shops flanking the carriage entry. There is an additional carriage entry located midway along the west range, and the north and east ranges feature a continuous verandah that acts as an extended 'porte-cochere'. To the east, a high rubble screen wall separates the courtyard from the kitchen garden. The coach-houses still have folding boarded doors, and above them were living quarters for staff.

The stables have retained nearly all of their original fittings. South of the secondary carriage entry, there are six stalls, with a larger stallion's stall at the corner and two more stalls along the south range. North of the carriage entry, there are five open-fronted stalls and a separate single stall positioned at right angles in the north corner. The gated stalls to the south showcase high-quality woodwork in the partitions, featuring iron stanchions capped by ball finials. These stalls are well-lit and well-ventilated, thanks to iron ventilators in the cambered barrel roof. The stallion's stall at the corner has a curved front partition, while the open-fronted stalls to the north allow horses to be tethered. Above the stables is the coachman's accommodation, and there is a probable workshop or store in the south-east corner, which was not accessible during the inspection.
