Description
The Vaynor War Memorial is a tall Gothic-style monument made of Bath stone ashlar, featuring a gabled design with a coped gable, a fleur-de-lys ridge, and small cross-gables on each side adorned with gargoyles. The sides of the memorial have a moulded plinth and one set-off. The center showcases a tall square-headed pierced panel with inset ashlar tracery, topped with a pointed head that includes ogee tracery and rosettes in the spandrels. The main part contains an ashlar cross with arms positioned just above mid-height and a central square boss monogrammed with "IHS." The cross rests on a base within the central long panel, which has a moulded top and a traceried blind roundel featuring incised carved spandrels. This roundel includes an asymmetrically-set smaller roundel with a blank quatrefoil and two mouchettes above.
The memorial is elevated on a square platform accessed by three steps, surrounded by iron railings that feature scrollwork beneath the top rail. It is enclosed on three sides by a low retaining wall with chamfered coping and iron railings, which extend outward at right angles along the pavement line at each end. There is also an iron gate leading into the garden behind the memorial. The standards are marked with the name Bayliss Jones & Bayliss & Co. An additional panel on the left side of the pedestal lists the names of those who fell in the 1939-45 war, alongside three marble panels inscribed with the names of the fallen.
