Description

Carmel Welsh Baptist Chapel and the attached schoolroom is a building constructed in 1844. The chapel features painted stucco with a slate close-eaved roof and a lateral facade that includes thin stucco pilasters at each corner. It has two long paired arched windows in the center and two shorter arched gallery lights on the outer sides, along with two flat-headed doors. The main windows have later 19th-century stucco surrounds with keystones, and the space between the windows is treated as a broad pilaster with a fluted lower section and a moulded cap. The doors are plain and fitted with 20th-century doors and overlights. The outer windows also feature stucco moulded arches and keystones, with all glazing dating from the 20th century. A raised plinth is present, and there is a plaque with concave corners above the center windows that reads: "Carmel Capel y Bedyddwyr Adeiladwyd 1844." The left end wall is also stuccoed, with raised strips on each side and 20th-century windows on each floor that replaced Georgian-style sash windows noted in 1987. The rear, made of rubble stone, has two similar 20th-century windows on each floor with stone voussoirs. There is a lean-to on the right end wall, with a rubble stone main gable above.

The right schoolroom, which is at right angles to the facade, has a rendered wall (exposed rubble noted in 1987) and 20th-century steps leading up to a door on the left.

Inside, the chapel features three-sided galleries dating from around 1860-70, supported by marbled cast-iron columns with chamfered and stopped bressumers. The paired brackets support a painted grained frontal that includes panels in moulded surrounds, a central square panel with a clock, and longer panels on each side, topped with a cornice that has a fretwork course below. The gallery angles are curved with square panels. The painted grained raked gallery pews have panel backs and ends, while the ground floor pews have been removed. The semi-circular balustraded pulpit has turned balusters, two large turned newels with finials, and two ringed columns supporting it beneath, with curving steps on each side that lack rails. A stud partition has been inserted at the rear of the columns. The flat ceiling is divided by strips into panels, likely all from the 20th century. The two doors lead into enclosed panelled lobbies that have four-panel doors and tilting overlights. The schoolroom, which is now used as a chapel, features a boarded ceiling.
