Description
The limekilns south of Cefn Bridge are built into a steep slope and feature three upper-level pots, which are now capped. The structure is made of coursed rubble limestone with large quoins. The arches are constructed with faced voussoirs and keystones, and they have hinges for former gates. A string course runs along the base of a low parapet. A long earthwork and slag block ramp connects the charging area of the kilns to the tramroad at the south end. The kiln walls are slightly battered, and there are gently curving wing walls.
There are two access tunnels at the front, from which openings with flat cast iron lintels lead at right angles to the three pots. At the ends of these access tunnels, an unusual narrow tunnel crosses the rear of the kiln bank, running transversely to tall arches that were once exposed at either end but are now concealed by the slope. Further drawing arches at each end of the bank are also currently hidden. The drawing holes themselves are made of ribbed cast iron plates with a distinctive and possibly unique design, showcasing the innovative use of iron by the Cyfarthfa works.
