Description
Duffryn Ffrwd Manor is a 3-window, 2-storey house of square plan, likely dating to the 18th century. The front of the house faces north. The north and east sides are rendered, while the south and west sides are constructed of large blocks of coursed stone. The roof is hipped with swept slate coverings, wide boarded eaves, and now lacks chimneys. Rusticated quoins are present. The ground floor windows are set within full-height round arches with rusticated dressings. They are six-over-six-pane hornless sash windows with flat tops and stone sills.
Around 1900, a single-story bay was added to the front, featuring a canted porch and a canted bay window to the right, both with continuous balustraded parapets. The original window within its full-height arch is retained to the left. The doorway and bay window have moulded segmental heads and a continuous impost band, incorporating banded rustication. The front doors are double-panelled with a plain overlight, flanked by narrow sashes with flat tops. The canted bay window features horned sashes without glazing bars. Modern extensions to the east obscure the lower-story windows. A round-headed stairlight with intersecting tracery is centrally positioned on the upper storey. To the right of the stairlight is a blocked window mirroring the design of other windows, with a small 4-pane window rising to the eaves.
The south and west sides have whitened ashlar under the full-height arches, including flat arches with keystones above the windows. Flat arches with voussoirs are present above the upper-storey windows just below the eaves. The south garden front has modern French doors in the centre, likely dating to the late 20th century, with a six-pane overlight and an arched head constructed of voussoirs. The doorway is flanked by full-height round arches, with the window to the left altered to form French doors beneath the retained upper sash.
Inside the porch, half-glazed double doors are flanked by side lights within a doorcase featuring a cornice supported on brackets and arched panels beneath the lights. These doors lead into an L-shaped hall divided by a half-glazed partition. The hall features a decorated ceiling cornice with flower bosses and modillions. A wide elliptical arch with a panelled soffit frames the staircase, which rises to the left. The dog-leg staircase has plain metal uprights and a moulded handrail which curves to form a spiral at the base; paneling is present on the side walls. The stairlight contains stained glass depicting two owls in a tree. Another elliptical arch is at the top of the stairs, with a late 20th-century partition dividing the landing.
Interior details include decorated moulded ceiling roses and cornices, dado rails, and panelled doors in panelled surrounds. The partition wall between the two main front rooms has been removed, potentially incorporating fireplaces. The larger west room has a ceiling cornice decorated with leaves and scrolls in relief, and a ceiling rose featuring acanthus leaves. The east room also has a prominent ceiling rose. The northwest room, accessed from the hall, has a cornice with palmettes and stylized egg and dart decoration.
