Description

Bwlch y Maen is a two-storey house, likely dating from the 19th century, constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs and rendered stacks. The main range is whitewashed and comprises two distinct sections. The front hall is a three-window design, featuring a gabled porch on the right-hand side, containing a 20th-century panelled door and a large chimney stack. The lower-storey windows are 6-over-6-pane sash windows with stone sills; the central window has a segmental head, while the flanking windows have flat rendered heads. The central upper-storey window is a 6-over-6-pane window within a gabled half-dormer, flanked by 3-over-6-pane sash windows with flat heads. The right-hand section of the main range is two windows wide, with an end chimney stack and multi-pane casement windows with segmental brick heads and jambs. The west gable end is roughcast with a small multi-pane window with a segmental head, offset to the right, on the upper storey.

To the left of the main house is a long stone range set at a right angle, with openings featuring segmental stone voussoir heads. The north gable end has tripartite horned sashes on both storeys, while the west side has a single 6-over-6-pane sash window on the lower storey. The east side of this range has a central doorway flanked by 3-over-6-pane sash windows, with a planked door to the right. Two dormers are present on the upper storey, each with a flat roof, containing a sash window on the left and a three-light sash window to the left of centre. A stack is located to the right.

The rear of the house is built into a steep bank. The south gable end of the additional range features a half-lit doorway on the left and a small, late 20th-century window to the right. Behind the hall are two small windows with segmental heads on the upper storey; one is multi-pane on the left, and the other is a late 20th-century window on the right. Ground-floor, towards the centre, is the segmental brick head of a former opening. Some original masonry of the left-hand unit is visible, predating the 19th-century rebuilding, and includes a single multi-pane window with a segmental brick head.

The house is now entered through a later kitchen range with a flagstone floor. A small passage runs below ground level at the rear, its purpose uncertain. The hall contains a stone fireplace with a large, chamfered timber lintel and a bake oven on the left side. A stone staircase is situated to the left of the fireplace. The ceiling features four spine beams with narrow chamfers, with small corbels supporting the side beams. There were also cross beams. A stone flagstone floor is present. A doorway to the right of the fireplace leads to a west room, which features a 20th-century fireplace flanked by two tall, round-headed recesses that appear to have been windows, possibly linked to a former chapel.
