Description

9 Mount Stuart Square is a building of three storeys and a single window bay, dating from the 18th century. It has a slate roof and brick chimneys. The exterior is stuccoed, with some scribing to imitate ashlar, and features a rusticated ground floor on a shallow plinth. A cornice and parapet cap the building. The second-floor windows are broad tripartite openings, articulated by Doric pilasters, while the windows above are Venetian-style, also with Doric pilasters and a shell motif in a small tympanum. A cornice sits over the rusticated ground floor.

The ground floor of number 8 has a square-headed doorway and a large, three-light shop window with modern round-arched glazing to its right. Number 9 has a later 19th-century commercial front in bathstone, dated 1889, laid on a grey stone plinth. This front is in the style of Flemish Renaissance architecture and was designed by W D Blessley. It is characterised by a deep entablature with a cornice, and the words "Perch Buildings" are inscribed in bronze lettering on the frieze. The architrave is decorated with keystones and a cartouche above the doorway, where the entablature projects forward and is surmounted by a small triangular pediment. The doorway is flanked by pilasters with swagged capitals, and to the right of the door are three windows with bulbous columns. Decorated panels are present in the plinth below.
