Description

This is an Italianate bank building constructed in the 19th century from grey coursed stone with bathstone dressings, and a ground floor of bathstone. The building is three storeys high and has seven bays facing east and five bays facing north, with an additional bay on the north ground floor, and a slightly recessed corner bay. Yellow brick chimneys are topped with bathstone cornices.

The building features a heavy cornice, and a sill band. The second floor has square-headed windows surrounded by shouldered architraves with fluting above. Below, the first floor windows have triangular pediments on narrow pilasters and brackets. The ground floor windows are round-headed and set between pilasters, with an overall banded rustication. A plinth with ventilation grilles forms the base of the building. The corner bay contains a rectangular doorway with an entablature featuring a pulvinated frieze, supported by short granite columns on high plinths.

A triangular wooden lobby leads to the banking hall, which has dark oak panelling and an original counter, along with partitions separating offices. Roman Doric columns support beams decorated with an egg-and-dart design. The offices have a simpler ceiling treatment.
