Description
The Lake Dam, which includes spillways, is a wide, straight structure made of stone, oriented east to west. The northern side of the dam, facing the lake, features a concave and battered wall, while the southern side is raised above the level of the formal gardens and is covered with grass. A promenade runs along the top of the dam, bordered by late 20th-century iron railings and partly paved with paviers. At the western end of the dam, there is a spillway that allows water to flow from the lake into a channel, which then leads to the Roath Brook to the south. This spillway takes the form of a cascade that runs beneath a bridge located under the dam and curves towards the southeast. The bridge is supported by simple cast iron girders, and the abutments and sides of the spillway are constructed from snecked rock-faced stone. The western end of the dam seamlessly connects with the spillway, while the eastern ends curve outward.
