Description
The entrance gateway and flanking walls to the Jews' Cemetery are constructed from snecked grey stone and feature a tall gabled entrance. The gable is topped with stone copings and kneelers, which likely originally had finials at the apex and angles. The tall pointed-arched doorway is adorned with heavy roughcast moulding and a large keyblock with indentations, along with a hoodmould that has square end stops. This doorway is fitted with later double metal doors, each featuring a round head, vertical bars, and a Star of David, topped by an open metalwork overthrow. The gates serve as memorials, although they are undated. Above the doorway, in the gable, is a round-arched stone tablet displaying a Star of David, with a decorative hoodmould that has end bosses.
The flanking walls are topped with flat stone copings, with the left side stepping down. On the right side, there is a large rectangular stone tablet embedded in the wall, which reads, "This ground was given for Jews Cemetery by the most noble John, Marquess of Bute, AD 1841, AM 5602." Below this, the names of the president, treasurer, and secretary—Mark, Solomon, and Samuel Marks—are inscribed. Beyond the tablet, there is a butt joint followed by a former doorway with brick jambs. A plain tablet is located to the right, along with late 20th-century walling that includes an entrance.
At the time of inspection, there was no access to the cemetery, but inside the entrance, there is an open range with a corrugated metal roof. The left side features a rubble wall containing a pointed-arched doorway that leads into a lean-to.
