Description

Gwaelod-y-garth School is a small junior school building with a long plan and five cross bays, constructed from snecked rockfaced stone with ashlar and brick dressings. It features a Welsh slate roof adorned with terracotta ridge tiles that include ventilators and overhanging eaves. At the ridge between the gables, there is a slate-hung bellcote topped with a bell-shaped lead roof, a finial, and arched louvres.

The playground frontage consists of five cross bays, with the lower outer bays set back. The windows in the central bays are tripartite, featuring four multipane lights with tipping top casements in the taller centre pair, all within a raised brick surround that includes a decorative apron, small cornices, and a scrolled pediment. There is a blind keyed oculus at the apex of the centre gable and similar louvred windows in the side wings, which have paired lights in a less ornate brick surround. Ventilators are located below the sill above a brick plinth course.

The front elevation is simpler, showcasing paired deep full dormers with a roof that sweeps down between them. Each dormer contains long paired multipane lights with raised brick surrounds, scrolled pediments, aprons, and a moulded brick continuous sill band, along with a similar plinth course and ventilation grilles. At each end, there are stepped windows resembling the tripartite windows but with only two parts and a keyed oculus above. The gable ends of the outer wings, which are stepped back, feature separate entrances for girls and boys, with doorways that have raised brick surrounds, carved names, and scrolled pediments.

Inside, the school retains its original classroom layout, with double depths, part glazed and panelled doors, a boarded dado, and inserted ceilings.
